The Ottoman castle that dominates the seafront tells a different layer of the same story: Cesme was one of the empire's most important naval positions, and the Battle of Cesme in 1770, fought in the bay just offshore, was one of the most dramatic naval engagements in Ottoman history.
For food, the Kumru sandwich is the thing to try — a Cesme-specific institution made with local sesame bread, sausage and cheese. Any local will tell you which stand to find. The daily ferry to Chios — the Greek island 45 minutes across the water — is well worth a day trip if your stay allows it. A valid passport is required.
