Cesme — What Your Driver Knows

Cesme occupies the westernmost tip of Turkey — the last piece of Anatolia before the Aegean opens up towards the Greek islands. The drive from Izmir Airport takes around 60 to 75 minutes along a smooth motorway, and the moment you arrive you understand why this peninsula has been attracting Turkish high society for decades.

Cesme Castle stands at the heart of the old town, a medieval Ottoman fortress that once served as one of the most important naval bases of the empire. The Battle of Cesme in 1770 — one of the most dramatic naval engagements in Ottoman history — was fought just offshore. The castle is in excellent condition and the views from its towers over the Aegean are outstanding.

Just outside the town, Ilica Beach is famous for something unusual: the sea here is genuinely warmer than the surrounding bays. Underground thermal springs mix with the seawater, raising the temperature noticeably. On a warm summer morning the difference between Ilica and nearby beaches is immediately obvious to any swimmer.

From Cesme port, daily ferries cross to Chios — the Greek island known in Turkish as Sakiz Adasi. The crossing takes around 45 minutes. A passport is required for this short but memorable island hop.

Cesme also has a lesser-known history. Before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923, the town had a substantial Greek Orthodox community. The Greek church of Cesme still stands in the town centre — it is a museum today. Walking past it you can still see the architecture and inscriptions of a community that shaped this place for centuries.

Alacati is a 15-minute drive from Cesme town. What was once a quiet Greek farming village — its maze-like alleys of stone houses still reflect the original settlement layout — has transformed into one of the most fashionable summer destinations in Turkey. Restaurants, bars and boutique hotels line the cobblestone streets. The former Greek church of Alacati still stands at the heart of the village, now a mosque. Our drivers know Alacati well, but finding a specific address in its narrow alleys can take patience — we will get you as close as the streets allow.

One local food tip not to be missed: Kumru. This is a Cesme-specific sandwich made with local sesame bread, filled with sausage and cheese — a fast food institution in the town that has been feeding locals and visitors alike for generations. Any Cesme local will tell you exactly where to find the best one.
