One of the most distinctive things to eat there is Kelle Söğüş — boiled lamb's head meat, served in a wrap with onion, tomato and parsley. It is an acquired taste for some, but it is genuine Izmir street food that you will not find prepared as well anywhere else.
The Ancient Agora of Smyrna — one of the best-preserved Roman-period public squares in Turkey — sits in the middle of the modern city, which is itself a statement about how history and the present coexist here. Alongside the Roman columns and Byzantine walls you will find apartment buildings, tea shops and ordinary urban life continuing around the ruins as it has for centuries.
