The City of Ottoman Princes & Ancient Civilisations

Manisa is one of the most historically layered cities on the Aegean coast of Turkey — a place where Ottoman imperial history, ancient Lydian civilisation and early Christian heritage converge in a single province. Sitting in the fertile Gediz river valley between Izmir and the interior of Anatolia, it is close enough to Izmir to be reached in under an hour from the airport yet distinct enough in character to feel like a completely different world.

For much of the Ottoman period, Manisa served as the training ground for Ottoman princes — the şehzades — before they ascended to the throne in Istanbul. Future sultans including Suleiman the Magnificent were sent to govern Manisa as a proving ground for leadership. The central district of the city still carries this legacy in its name: Sehzadeler — meaning "the district of princes." The Sultan Mosque, built for Suleiman the Magnificent's mother Hafsa Sultan, remains one of the finest examples of early Ottoman religious architecture in western Turkey.

Manisa is also one of Turkey's most important agricultural regions. The Sultaniye grape — a large, sweet, seedless variety — is grown in the vineyards of the Gediz valley and forms the basis of Turkey's raisin export industry. The harvest season in late summer transforms the valley, with grapes laid out on drying mats across the countryside as far as the eye can see. The region also produces excellent figs, peaches and pomegranates.

Today Manisa is also a significant industrial city. The Manisa Organised Industrial Zone (OSB) is one of the largest in Turkey, hosting major manufacturers in electronics, home appliances, food processing and automotive components. We regularly provide private transfers for business travellers, factory buyers and corporate visitors to all addresses in the city and its industrial zones.

🏺
Mesir Macunu — UNESCO Intangible Heritage A spiced paste of dozens of herbs prepared for nearly 500 years in Manisa. Created by the physician of Hafsa Sultan — mother of Suleiman the Magnificent — as a medicinal remedy. Every spring it is thrown from the Sultan Mosque to the crowds below during the Mesir Macunu Festival, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.
🍇
Sultaniye Grapes The Gediz valley around Manisa produces the famous Sultaniye — a large, sweet, seedless grape that is the foundation of Turkey's raisin export industry. In late summer the valley fills with the scent of drying grapes. Fresh Sultaniye from local markets in season is extraordinary.
🏛️
Sardis (Sardes) — Near Salihli The ancient capital of the Lydian Empire, where coins were first minted in human history. The ruins near Salihli include a vast gymnasium, one of the largest ancient synagogues ever discovered, and the Temple of Artemis. One of the Seven Churches of Asia from the Book of Revelation.
✝️
Thyatira & Philadelphia — Two More of the Seven Churches Thyatira is modern-day Akhisar. Philadelphia is modern-day Alasehir. Together with Sardis near Salihli and Smyrna in Izmir itself, Manisa province contains four of the seven early Christian communities addressed in the Book of Revelation — making it one of the most significant regions in early Christian history.

Factory & Business Transfers Manisa's Organised Industrial Zone is one of Turkey's largest, home to international manufacturers in electronics, home appliances and automotive components. We regularly serve business travellers and factory buyers visiting Manisa's industrial districts. Same fixed price, professional service.
⛰️
Spil Daglari National Park The mountain rising directly behind Manisa city — Spil Dagi — is a national park with hiking trails, pine forests and panoramic views over the Gediz valley. According to mythology, Niobe wept here for her children until she turned to stone, and the formation known as Weeping Rock (Aglar Kaya) is still visible on the mountain face.

Mesir Macunu is a spiced paste made from dozens of herbs and spices that has been produced in Manisa for nearly 500 years. It was originally created by the chief physician of Hafsa Sultan — mother of Suleiman the Magnificent — as a remedy to restore her health after illness. The physician prepared the paste and had it distributed from the Sultan Mosque to the people. This tradition continues today as the annual Mesir Macunu Festival every spring, during which the paste is thrown from the mosque to the crowds gathered below. UNESCO added it to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.
Three of the Seven Churches of Asia from the Book of Revelation are in Manisa province. Sardis — the ancient Lydian capital where coins were first minted — is near Salihli, with impressive ruins including a gymnasium, synagogue and Temple of Artemis. Thyatira is modern-day Akhisar. Philadelphia is modern-day Alasehir. A fourth church, Smyrna, is in Izmir itself. This makes the region between Izmir and Manisa one of the most important areas in early Christian history.
Sultaniye is a large, sweet, seedless grape variety grown in the Gediz valley around Manisa. It is the primary variety used for Turkish raisin production and forms a significant part of Turkey's agricultural exports. In late summer the valley is transformed by the harvest — grapes laid out on drying mats across the countryside. Fresh Sultaniye from local markets during the season is exceptional, and significantly different in flavour from the dried version most people know.
