A Quieter Corner of the Aegean

Didim sits at the southern tip of the Aegean coast, south of Kusadasi and Cesme, and has a noticeably different character from both. Where Kusadasi is busy and international, and Bodrum is fashionable and expensive, Didim has kept more of its original Aegean town feel. The central part of Didim still looks and feels like a real Turkish town — stone streets, local restaurants, a working marina, people who live here year round rather than just in summer.

Altinkum, the beach resort area, is the lively side of Didim — a long stretch of sandy beach with bars, restaurants and a British holiday community that has been coming here for decades. The name means "golden sands" in Turkish and the description is accurate: the beach is long, the water shallow enough for children and the atmosphere decidedly relaxed compared to the resort towns further north.

Akbuk is the quieter alternative — a small, sheltered bay about 15 kilometres from central Didim with a calmer character, cleaner waters and several good resort hotels set against a backdrop of pine forest. Guests who know the area often prefer Akbuk for precisely the reason that it feels undiscovered.

The Temple of Apollo at Didyma is the cultural anchor of the whole area — and the reason that travellers who are not purely beach-holiday visitors come here at all. This is one of the largest Ancient Greek temples ever constructed. The columns that remain standing are nearly 20 metres tall, and the scale of the ruin makes it one of the most impressive ancient sites in Turkey.

🏛️
Temple of Apollo, Didyma One of the largest Ancient Greek temples ever built. The columns still standing are nearly 20 metres tall — a genuinely unmissable site just minutes from the resorts.
🏖️
Altinkum Beach Long, sandy Blue Flag beach with shallow water — ideal for families. The name means "golden sands" in Turkish. Bars, restaurants and watersports along the waterfront.
🌊
Akbuk Bay A sheltered, pine-backed bay with a quieter atmosphere and cleaner water than the main resort area. Popular with guests who want peace over party.
🏺
Miletus & Priene Two more major ancient cities within easy reach — Miletus was one of the great cities of the ancient Greek world, and Priene is one of the best-preserved Hellenistic sites in Turkey.
D-Marin Didim Marina One of the largest and best-equipped marinas in the Aegean — home to Yacht Club Didim and a magnet for yacht owners travelling the Turkish coast.
