About the Destination
Selcuk is a small Turkish town that wears its history on its sleeve. Walk five minutes in any direction from the centre and you will find yourself beside something ancient — a Roman column, a Byzantine wall, the base of a temple that was once one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Most visitors come here for Ephesus and leave having seen far less than the place has to offer.
The town itself is genuinely Turkish in character — not a resort, not a tourist village, but a real working town where people live year round. The Saturday market fills the streets with fruit, vegetables, olives, cheese and clothing in the way that markets in this region have operated for centuries. It is one of the best places in the Aegean to spend a morning without spending much money.
Ephesus Ancient City is the centrepiece — one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman cities anywhere in the world, with the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the Sacred Way all still standing. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good reason. Arrive early in the morning: the site is large and by midday in summer it fills with tour groups from Kusadasi and cruise ships.
Selcuk's role in early Christian history is profound. This is where St. John — one of the twelve apostles of Jesus — spent his final years and is buried. The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasoluk Hill above the town, built over his tomb by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. The House of Virgin Mary, where the mother of Jesus is believed to have spent her last years, is 9 kilometres from Selcuk in the hills — a place of genuine pilgrimage that draws visitors of all faiths and none.
